This superb quality Arts & Craft spot-hammered silver bowl was most certainly made by A. E. Jones for the retailers Bruford & Sons. It is dated London 1933. The circular twin-handled silver bowl standing on four satyr mask hoof feet and with pierced lattice and floral decoration just below the rim. Finished with a lightly hammered surface and with comfortable finger plates immediately above the handles.
A.E. Jones produced pieces for other silversmiths and retailers. This is definitely one of his designs.

This superb Georgian wirework Old Sheffield plate bread basket dates circa 1825. Wirework baskets are rather scarce and this is a lovely example. The lower section with lobed sides , the upper section with an elegant wirework frame within a shell interspersed gadroon border. Fitted with a beautiful rope-twist swing handle.

Condition:

Wirework in very good condition.
a little copper showing at places on some of the wirework, adding to the patina.

This small and delightful pierced silver butter dish bears the marks of the illustrious Mappin & Webb and is dated Sheffield 1936. Of circular form, the sides pierced with lattice designs and raised on four bun feet. The dish flanked by elegant lug handles and fitted with its original blue glass liner. Completed by a well matched silver butter knife by Levi & Salaman dated Birmingham 1926.

This superb and rather unusual Arts & Craft solid silver large basket bears the marks of James Dixon & Sons and is dated Sheffield 1902. Of navette shape, the crenelated sides with pierced alternate panels. The lower section with spot-hammered decorations. The base engraved with a stylised garland. It has an excellent silver gauge and feels satisfyingly heavy when picked up. the underside fully hallmarked.

Of generous proportion, the vase-shaped silver body elaborately pierced with scrolls surrounding a shield-shaped cartouche.
The sides with an articulated beaded handle.
The lobed rim with beaded border.
Raised on a petal-shaped pedestal foot with pierced alternate panels.
Fitted with the original cranberry glass liner.

This fabulous spot-hammered Arts & Craft sterling silver dish was made by the Master silversmith Robert Edgar Stone* and is dated London 1934. The shallow spot-hammered oval bowl with a slightly scalloped rim and flanked by a pair of very distinctive handles in the form of stylised crowns. The piece was produced in the year of the Jubilee which explains such a design. It has a very good silver gauge.

*Robert Edgar Stone known professionally as R.E. Stone was an English silversmith and was the son of a carpenter. Born in 1903, he was famous for its handcrafted style and the work he produced for several notable clients. Stone trained at the Central School of Arts in London. During his time with the school, he enjoyed a scholarship from the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths. This enabled him to travel through Europe and also train in Paris. He founded his own workshop in 1929. Stone’s work is distinctive for being completely handmade, even during eras when similar works were being mass-produced.

This exquisitely pierced silver sweetmeat basket is dated Birmingham 1905. The tapered body is pierced with leaves and scrolls surrounding two vacant oval reserves.

Gadroon border and a rope-twist swing handle.

It was used for all sorts of things, nuts, candy, dried fruits, sugar lumps.

The removable cranberry glass liner is perfect and is the original liner. It is a perfect fit to the scalloped border.

This stylish cased pair of pierced silver butter dishes are hallmarked for Chester 1926. Each dish of circular form, the sides pierced with exquisite lattice designs and raised on four ball feet. The dishes flanked by elegant lug handles and fitted with their original frosted glass liners. The set is completed by the matching silver butter forks, all beautifully presented in the original box. The forks themselves are a simple and exquisite seal top design. The frosted glass liners with star cut base, always a sign of quality. This is rare on the market; complete cased sets are few and far between and this is a very elegant example.
